Size – Bamboo Window Shades Tip 2

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

DSC_3937smallLocating the right size blinds won’t be a big deal as blind manufacturers make a wide variety of sizes, but measuring properly for the shades is a completely different story.

TIP 1: When measuring the height of the window and comparing it to available sizes, going one size up is always a good idea.  The reason is if you measured a little off and got the exact length, it might be a bit short which defeats the purpose, but shades that are a little to long hide nicely stacked at the bottom.  This leads us to tip number 2.

TIP 2: The same rules apply for measuring the width of the window for the window shades.  If you measure just the width from edge to edge of the glass and don’t include any of the actual window trim you will end up with blinds that are to narrow and not wide enough.  A good rule of thumb is to include the width of the glass and window trim in the overall width measurement.  It will still fit nicely between the window casings.

Light Control – Bamboo Window Shades Tip 1

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Even though bamboo window blinds and all blinds for that matter are designed to block out light some do a better job than others.  The amount of light the particular style of blind lets in also can effect the mode and overall look of the room.  Below are a few other things to consider.

  • Glare - Reduce glare on the television and computer screens
  • Brightness - Change the brightness of a room, especially if you work third shift or have a migraine
  • UV Rays – They aren’t just bad for your eyes.  They also can damage furniture and art, causing them to fade.

TIP: Some bamboo window shades block out more sun than others, check and see before purchasing them how much light they block.

History

I’ve actually had trouble finding the history of the bamboo window shade.  Most of the history was based more around window blinds and shades in general and wasn’t specific to bamboo window shades.  Here are some general facts about blinds.

  • Window blinds, specifically Venetian blinds came from Persia
  • Venetian travelers and traders brought the blinds to Venice and Paris
  • In the 1950’s the blinds were made of 2 inche metal slates and were hung with pieces of fabric
  • In the 1980’s the metal blinds were replaced with other materials such as vinyl and wood
  • The horizontal lines are great from an interior design point of view
  • Bamboo window shades create a very laid back and calming atmosphere
  • They are very cost effective compared to other types of window coverings such as drapes
  • If you use outdoor bamboo shades make sure they are treated to stop water and sun from damaging them

If you find any other information about bamboo window shades feel free to leave a comment below and I’ll add it to the list.

After more research I did find some information saying that in Japan around 794 and 1185 they used a bamboo window shade as a type of screen from the sun.

Top down bottom up blinds are a unique type of blind that can be opened or closed from both the top and bottom of the blind, hence where the name comes from.  The number one advantage of this type of blind is its ability to let a large amount of light in while maintaining the privacy that a lot of people like for rooms such as a bathroom or bedroom.

Bamboo Window Treatment

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

When it comes to bamboo window treatment there are two main types.  Below I’ll give a quick overview of the differences between the two types of bamboo window shades.

  1. Bamboo Roman Shade – This type of bamboo window treatment is usually constructed of some sort of woven bamboo cloth that lays very flat when the shade is down.  They are opened and closed with a pull cord.  When the pull cord is pulled the roman shade stacks as it goes up into very even sized panels.  These types of window treatments do a great job of blocking out the sun from coming through the window.
  2. Bamboo Roll Up Blinds – These blinds have a similar look to the bamboo roman shade when they are in the lowered position.  The look is very flat, but instead of a woven bamboo they are a grouping of very thin pieces of bamboo.  When this type of bamboo window treatment is raised it uses the same type of pull cord, but the blind rolls up.  Think of the same way you would roll up a sleeping bad or yoga mat.

There are other variations, but they generally fall into one of the two above mentioned types.  There are other things to consider after deciding on which type of bamboo window shades you would like such as price, size, and color.

Outdoor Roll Up Blinds

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Outdoor roll up blinds works great on patios, decks, or sun rooms.  They do a great job of blocking the strong sunlight which is great when you are trying to keep the sun room or patio cool in the afternoon.  Outdoor roll up blinds can help reduce energy costs in this way.  They are perfect for keeping the area cool and in turn helping the air conditioning run less in the summer.

In the cooler Fall and Winter months you can simply roll them up to let as much sun in as possible to help warm a room to keep heating costs down.

They come in many sizes to fit a wide variety of windows.  Sizes range from 23 inches all the way up to over 60 inches.

The ability to roll them up and have a bright open view or lowering them and completely blocking the sun is one of the best advantages of outdoor roll up blinds.
